With our extensive feral rabbit problem, you can see why the tradition took off here in Australia - and has become synonymous with Australian country life. Rabbit fur felt starts as cleaned, blended fibres formed into a loose hood, then tightened with heat, moisture and movement to create a dense felt. The 'hood' is then steamed and blocked to set the shape of the desired hat. The edges are trimmed, the surface is lightly sanded for a smooth hand-feel, and the sweatband and hatband are fitted. A water-repellent finish helps the hat stay clean and hold its shape - even if youāre caught in the rain.
